Site-specific performance / actions / interventions, 2020 - ongoing

Untitled, 2024
performative action, duration ca 5 days, Lauwersoog, The Netherlands

I was walking across the dam that demarcates the human-made boundary between the North Sea and the green-brown-pastel coloured Lauwersmeer. Here I was struck by the intense reddish hue of the North Sea waters, evoking recollections of Silver Mine Lake near Cape Town, South Africa. This lake’s distinct red colour is attributed to the presence of the surrounding indigenous Fynbos flora, Rooibos being one of these plants. Intrigued by this parallel, I collected water from the Lauwersmeer, subsequently brewing it into Rooibos tea, and having it steep throughout my time at Lauwersoog, about 5 days. On the day of my departure, I returned the infused tea to its water source, pouring it onto the exposed sands of the Lauwersmeer during low tide. To my astonishment, the intermingling of the tea with the wet sand yielded an uncanny resemblance to arterial blood, catalysing a contemplative introspection concerning the landscape’s historical trajectory. More specifically, the profound impact of human intervention, notably exemplified by the construction of the dam, which precipitated widespread ecological disruption and attendant loss of life, resonated deeply.

Heinze, 2022
7 min 30 sec, performance with Heinze and cotton string in Tenna, Switzerland

Heinze is a slightly absurdist performance work in which an attempt is made to both repair and embody a Heinze (a wooden rack traditionally used for drying hay) with the use of cotton rope. Placed in proximity to the Grass Museum and on a pasture, the work seeks to contextualise the initial function of the Heinze somewhat. However, as neither hay nor gestures associated with forking hay onto the structure are present during the performance, Heinze aims to simultaneously create its own vocabulary. By proposing a particular, although coexisting body-object orientation and relation, Heinze problematises and plays upon care, tradition and utility.
